NYLON (TR90)

TR90 (Grilamid® TR-90) is a high-performance polyamide thermoplastic material developed by Swiss EMS-GRIVORY. As the preferred choice for sports eyewear and premium sunglasses, TR90 is renowned for its ultra-lightweight, superior toughness, and memory-flex properties. It offers excellent chemical resistance and UV stability. This material is easy to edge, drill, and profile, making it particularly suitable for rimless and semi-rimless designs—an ideal choice for those seeking ultimate comfort and durability.

Scene-Specific Suitability
_

Running/Cycling/Outdoor

Ultra-lightweight prevents nose bridge pressure for long-distance comfort; sweat resistance

Rimless business styles

Easy cutting and edging; precise drilling; excellent frame compatibility

Children's eyewear

High toughness prevents breakage injuries; meets safety standards

Detailed Characteristics
_

EMS TR belongs to the polyamide 12 (PA12) family, a transparent or semi-transparent thermoplastic.

  • Ultra-lightweight: Density of 1.14g/cm³ — approximately 15% lighter than PC
  • High elastic memory: Instantly rebounds after 180-degree bending without permanent deformation
  • Excellent workability: Easy to cut, drill, edge, and profile with smooth, burr-free finishes
  • Temperature resistance: Operating range -40°C to +80°C, adapting to various climates
  • Chemical stability: Resistant to sweat, sunscreen, hairspray, and daily chemicals
  • Biocompatibility: ISO 10993 skin-contact approved, hypoallergenic
Origin & Manufacturing
_

Developed by Swiss EMS-GRIVORY in the 1980s, TR90 was originally used in medical devices and aerospace. Its manufacturing employs injection molding:

  1. Material drying: PA12 pellets dried at 80°C for 4-6 hours, moisture content below 0.1%
  2. High-temperature injection: Melting at 260-300°C, mold temperature 60-80°C
  3. Precision forming: Ideal for complex curves; allows integrated hinge designs
Comparative Analysis
_

TR90’s core advantage lies in the perfect combination of weight, toughness, and workability — lighter than CR-39 with easier rimless processing, more flexible and chemically stable than PC.
